Travel advice for John Lewis opening

Cardiff's new John Lewis shop, the Partnership's biggest outside of London, is due to open this Thursday with a lot of extra traffic expected on the roads as people from far and wide come to share in the shopping experience.

Cardiff Council is offering the following travel advice to people travelling in and out the city centre, so that the John Lewis opening - in terms of traffic and parking - goes as smoothly as possible.

On opening day John Lewis Cardiff will be open from 9.30am to 8pm, and due to the huge anticipation and interest in John Lewis people can expect afternoon and evening peak delays in and around the city centre.

People Commuting out of the city and those travelling in are advised to be aware of this, and where possible, use public transport. If you are travelling in by car motorists are advised to read and follow city centre road signage to the city's car parks.

John Lewis has more than 500 parking spaces, which can be accessed from Hayes Bridge Road but these are expected to be taken up very quickly so shoppers are advised to take advantage of other car parks around the city, all within walking distance of the new store.

These include the car park at the Capitol Centre and those at Knox Road, Dumfries Place, Greyfriars Road, Adam Street, Pellet Street, Quay Street and Wood Street.

Park and Ride facilities are also available at the new Cardiff City stadium in Leckwith. Opening times are 7.30am to 7.30pm  Monday to Saturday, except on match days, with the cost £3 per person or £7 for a family or group

Drop off points are at Westgate Street (southbound side at the junction of Quay St), Customhouse St (southern side opposite the Marriott) and the old section of Penarth Rd at the back of the railway station.

All existing Cardiff Bus services will be running as normal and make an excellent alternative to travelling by car.

During major events and concerts, Cardiff city-centre can be subject to road closures which can mean disruption to bus and taxi routes.

Generally the best way to travel to the city centre is with public transport and coach wherever possible. If you do bring your car into the city, you can ease worries over congestion and parking costs by using the council's Park & Ride services - (see the council websites for further information).

There is designated coach parking off Sophia Close. Driver facilities are available and the service costs £5 per coach.

Drivers are also advised to allow extra time for their journey into Cardiff. Widening works on the M4 may cause congestion at the busiest times.

Please plan your journey in advance and leave plenty of time to reach your destination.
