Capital's marketing arm rise to the challenge
The second annual review of Cardiff & Co, the company charged with promoting the capital, reveals that the organisation is making good progress in marketing the city-region and increasing investor confidence. The conception of Cardiff & Co came from a desire from the private and public sector across Cardiff to promote and market the capital nationally and internationally.
The company’s Chairman, Bill Savage said, “The progress made by Cardiff & Co during 2008/09 and in first quarter of this financial year is quite remarkable given the current economic climate and the company’s limited resources compared with our main European competitors especially England’s core cities as well as Edinburgh and Glasgow.
There were significant gains in the number of bed nights completed for conferences through the Cardiff & Co Convention Bureau from 2007/08 generating benefits to the economy in excess of £1.4 million. Membership of the Cardiff Tourism Network also increased significantly, rising from 90 to 135 – all recognising the added value that Cardiff & Co can bring to their business. The company also launched a new Investor Guide which received a very positive response from the commercial property sector. Over one million people have visited Cardiff & Co’s web site which has been revamped to reflect every aspect of life in the capital – Live, Work, Visit, Shop, Invest, Meet, Study and Events. Cardiff’s Ambassadors, now totalling 339 continue to champion the city’s cause”
He added, “The solid foundations that have enabled the company to move forward can be attributed to three key factors – a strong and marketable product, good collaboration between stakeholders and a passionate and committed team. However, there is much work to be done if we are to remain competitive with other major European cities.
We need to capitalise on the momentum generated across Cardiff and attract the additional investor members necessary for us to close the resourcing gap that currently exists between us and our competitor marketing companies in comparable European and world cities. The Welsh Assembly Government has given invaluable operational support and we look forward to developing this relationship.”
