Chairman chosen for Cardiff & Co
Adrian Clark will succeed Bill Savage as chairman of Cardiff & Co, the company set up to promote the city region. Mr Clark is the chairman of the Cardiff Business Partnership and is legal and General’s Cardiff location director and UK Chief Operating Officer for Protection.
He will take on his new role at Cardiff & Co full time from January 2012 when he steps down from Legal & General.
Bill Savage, who had been chairman of Cardiff & Co since 2007, said: “The appointment of Adrian Clark will help Cardiff & Co build on its successful beginnings. He will bring a most valuable link to Cardiff business, which is the key to the success of Cardiff & Co.
“The company is now on a sound financial footing and will be looking to deliver a wider reaching promotional programme in the coming years. Adrian Clark will be in the perfect position to bring together the work of Cardiff & Co with the Cardiff business community.”
Adrian Clark commented: “This is a really good opportunity to unite the interests of the Cardiff city region with those of businesses operating in the area. The private sector has always been an important component of the Cardiff & Co concept and I plan to build on the success achieved by Bill Savage in involving Cardiff businesses in promoting the city region.
“The Cardiff Business Partnership was set up to promote the interests of businesses in the city. I can’t think of a better way of doing that than by promoting the city region itself.”
Cllr Rodney Berman, leader of Cardiff Council, welcomed the appointment. He said: “There are great opportunities and challenges ahead for Cardiff. As we continue to make progress in developing the city it is important that Cardiff Council and the city’s most successful businesses work closely together. As the largest investor in Cardiff & Co we are keen to see the company develop and to work with us to attract further investment into the capital of Wales. The appointment of a respected figure such as Adrian Clark will be a real boost to our shared work.”
Richard Thomas, Cardiff & Co managing director, commented: “I have enjoyed an excellent relationship with the outgoing chairman and it is important that the chairman and chief executive are able to forge a strong working relationship. I am looking forward to working with Adrian Clark as the company moves into what is very much phase 2 of its existence. Bill Savage led the company through a successful phase 1 and now we are excited at the prospect of Adrian Clark moving the company forward with a strong board of directors and a committed and talented executive team.
In parallel with the appointment of Mr Clark, Cardiff & Co has also created a new position of Deputy Chair and has appointed Noreen Bray, an exisiting board director, to that role.
Mrs Bray takes up the position of deputy chair with immediate effect and will discharge the responsibilities of the chair until Mr Clark formally takes up the position.
With a background in broadcasting, marketing and PR, Mrs Bray, who is chair of Good Relations Wales, is ideally placed to strengthen the company’s business continuity and deliver a smooth transition.
Mrs Bray said: “I hope to deliver a smooth handover to the new chairman and will be working closely with him and the company’s managing director over the coming months. As soon as the new chairman is formally in place, I will revert to the deputy chair role, which is primarily focused on building relationships with partners and advising the chairman, board and managing director on strategy.”
