Back to news list The late Hilary David, a local businessman, who dedicated 15 years of his life to see a statue erected to celebrate the life of Ivor Novello has been recognised with a posthumous award. The idea of an award for a People’s Ambassador for Cardiff was conceived by Cardiff & Co in partnership with the South Wales Echo. The award reflects the selfless efforts of an unsung hero who has worked tirelessly to make Cardiff a better place to live, visit or invest. Commenting, Hywel Thomas a spokesperson for Cardiff & Co said, “The late Hilary David dedicated 15 years of his life to see a fitting statue erected to celebrate the life of Ivor Novello – undoubtedly our most gifted composer, actor and writer. Hilary David was passionate about Cardiff and believed with conviction that the achievements of one of the city’s most famous sons should never be forgotten. Despite failing health in his last years, Hilary David was determined that his aspiration would be fulfilled. The twelve foot bronze statue of Ivor Novello which now sits proudly alongside the Wales Millennium Centre leaves a lasting legacy for the people of Cardiff and visitors to the city to enjoy. It is fitting that Hilary David’s contribution to the capital city is recognised by this posthumous award.” Hilary David’s widow, Beth David said, “This project meant so much to Hilary and I can remember the pride and emotions he felt at the statue’s unveiling earlier this year. When I learnt of this award, I felt very emotional but at the same time I was thrilled as I’m sure will the rest of the family. I know that Hilary would have been humbled but quietly pleased to have been recognised in such a way by the people of Cardiff – a city that meant so much to him.” 05/11/09Posthumous award for People’s Ambassador for Cardiff
