Renewed Investment in City’s Marketing

Back to news list

Core investment in Cardiff’s city marketing company has been confirmed today in a move that puts the company in a strong position to build on the work it has been doing since its inception in 2007.

Cardiff & Co, the not for profit public private partnership tasked with promoting Cardiff to the world, announced today that it had successfully negotiated core investment from Cardiff Council and Harbour Authority for 2011-12 and the Council alone thereafter.  The company also announced that in order to unlock this core investment from the Council, its Board had been asked to submit a five year Strategy and Business Plan.

Cardiff & Co was established in 2007 by Cardiff Council to lead the promotion of the Cardiff city-region as the ideal destination in which to live, work, invest, meet, study, visit, shop and play.  It was to be built on core investment from the Council, supplemented by income from the private sector and other sources.  Apart from the Council, the company has a number of major investors, including Cardiff University, Cardiff Airport, St. David’s Partnership and UWIC.  The company also has a growing number of Corporate Champions as well as a Tourism Network that currently consists of 180 members from the breadth of the city-region.

Confirming the Council’s core investment, Council Leader Rodney Berman said:

“Cardiff & Co has played an increasingly influential role in the promotion of the Cardiff city-region with many successes such as its Cardiff Commitment aimed at attracting major events to the city, the Cardiff Ambassadors Programme, its iPhone App, the commercial property finder and a whole host of other activities.  The company’s progress can also be measured by the way it has successfully engaged with the private sector, unlocking significant amounts of investment which have helped the company turn the volume up on its activities.

“It’s against this track record and promise for the future that Cardiff Council has decided to renew its investment in the company, investment that will be unlocked via the agreement of a five year Strategy and Business Plan which the company is currently finalising.  We have also constituted an internal Service Redesign Project aimed at identifying instances where for reasons of effectiveness or efficiency, additional responsibilities might be transferred into Cardiff & Co.”
