Safer City thanks to pioneering research at Cardiff University

Back to news list

Pioneering research undertaken by Cardiff University’s Violence and Society Research Group has been recognised with a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education.  The research focused on reducing late-night violence in city centres.

The award was presented by Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh to the Cardiff University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Grant, and Professor Jonathan Shepherd.

Hywel Thomas from Cardiff & Co said, “The results of the work undertaken at Cardiff University by the Violence and Society Research Group, under the leadership of Professor John Shepherd are encouraging.  There were 106 fewer people treated for violence related injuries during the recent festive period (December 2009) at Cardiff A & E compared to the number of incidents handled in 2000.  The public will find these latest figures reassuring.  Clearly from our perspective, as the company responsible for promoting the city as a great place to live, visit, invest and study, it’s very good news indeed.

Cities can have an abundance of attractions and cultural facilities but safety is a key consideration for many people planning a journey.  Thanks to the local partnership between Cardiff University, the emergency services and local government, Cardiff is seen as a safe and friendly city.  This, supported by the richness of the city’s offer as visitor destination, is reflected in a 40 % increase in visitor numbers to the capital over the past decade.”
