Search is on for Peoples Ambassador for Cardiff

Back to news list

Cardiff & Co has teamed up with the South Wales Echo in the search for a People’s Ambassador for Cardiff.  The People’s Ambassador programme was launched in the Echo last week and is being run by Cardiff and Co – the body set up to promote business and investment in the city.

It has already crowned a number of business and celebrity ambassadors who can use their profiles to promote the city. Richard Thomas, Cardiff & Co’s managing director, said: “The concept behind Cardiff & Co’s Ambassador programme was to create an army of Ambassadors who are passionate about Cardiff and would be prepared to use their influence and networks to champion the city’s cause – people like Henry Engelhardt, Ieuan Evans, Judith Isherwood and Professor Sir Martin Evans.”

Cardiff and Co are now on the look out for a People’s Ambassador to stand as the face of the people of Cardiff – anyone who has helped to increase the appeal of the city to visitors.

Such people who’ve worked tirelessly for the city in the past include Hilary David and Ron and Margaret Harries. Businessman Hilary David campaigned for years to get a proper statue to legendary songwriter Ivor Novello in Cardiff, raising more than £80,000. He attended the unveiling of a statue in Cardiff Bay earlier this year but sadly died shortly after.

Ron Harries started a campaign in South Wales for monument to commemorate the coal industry in South Wales.
When he died in 1995 his wife Margaret took up the campaign and raised £55,000 over 10 years for a bronze statue, also situated in the Bay.

The winner will be presented with the People’s Ambassador Award for 2009 by the Leader of Cardiff Council, Rodney Berman at the prestigious Cardiff Ambassador Gala Dinner at the National Museum on Thursday evening, 5 November.

If you would like to nominate anyone for this award, please send your nominations by e-mail to tim.lewis@mediawales.co.uk or by post to: The People’s Ambassador Competition c/o Tim Lewis, Media Wales, 6 Park Street, Cardiff CF10 1XR.  The closing date is Thursday, 29 October.
